The Illusion of Freedom in Capitalism: A Call for Conscious Living

“According to Marx, the capitalist system inherently fosters the conditions that lead to its eventual breakdown.”

Marx’s vision appears to have been contradicted by history. In the past seventy years, capitalism has not only survived but thrived, expanding its reach across the globe, while communism has all but disappeared. But this contradiction reveals more about the human condition than it does about Marx’s ideas.

From the teachings of Christ to the manifestos of revolutionaries, communism has always aspired to a higher ethical ideal—one founded on solidarity, equity, and collective care. Its consistent failure to take root is not proof of its error but a testament to how difficult it is for humankind to embody such principles. These ideals demand much from us: selflessness, discipline, and a profound commitment to justice.

Moreover, the concept of freedom promoted by capitalism—the freedom to possess, consume, and choose endlessly—is a shallow and seductive illusion. True freedom is not found in ownership or in market choices. It is found in being: the freedom to coexist, to care, to reflect, and to live consciously. It’s a freedom grounded in empathy and collective human dignity.

To claim that what we fail to achieve must be wrong is a grave form of arrogance. We must instead embrace a deeper awareness: our destiny is neither written nor guaranteed. It lies entirely in our hands, shaped by the choices we make with knowledge, tenacity, and courage.

Even the serpent that spoke to Eve in the Garden of Eden—often seen as the deceiver—was not lying. He offered knowledge, choice, and self-awareness. Perhaps what we call sin is merely the painful birth of freedom: uncertain, imperfect, and profoundly human.

The signs of senile decay in our society—recognized only by a minority of intellectuals—call us to abandon blind faith in capitalist orthodoxy. It is time to ignite a new hope rooted in the conscious recognition of our limits and the untapped power of our humanity. Only through a renewed moral clarity and shared responsibility can we begin to imagine a more just future.

(Chat GPT5)
